Larissa/Talita versus Agatha/Duda in another all-Brazilian final
It’s a super samba Sunday at the Fort Lauderdale Major as – just like yesterday with the men – it will be an all-Brazilian final in the women’s bracket.
Yet again the girls from Brazil were in a different league at the beach on Sunday morning. All eyes were on America’s last team standing – Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross – as they aimed for their first Swatch Major Series final. However, they were beaten in straight sets by an inspired performance from Brazil’s Larissa/Talita, who won the Swatch World Tour Finals here in October 2015.
The second semifinal that followed was an absolute thriller between Europe’s final hope – Germans Laboureur/Sude – and Brazil’s Agatha/Duda, who dumped out Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross on Center Court on Saturday night.
The first set was a real ding-dong battle. The Brazilians were first to earn a set point, but the Germans clawed the points back before they went onto earn set points themselves. Back came Brazil: Laboureur shot into the net to gift Agatha/Duda set point at 24-23. But two points won by Julia Sude turned the match on its head and, after Agatha’s shot dropped out, the Germans took the lead.
Behind, the Brazilians upped their game in a ridiculously tight set that was tip and tuck throughout. Some breathtaking rallies had the crowd on their feet but, as the set wore on, Agatha/Duda tightened their grip on the game and levelled the score at 1-1.
More unbelievable beach volleyball was served up in the deciding set. The Germans look a narrow lead at 7-4 but Agatha/Duda stormed back with some simply amazing points. Laboureur continued to play some smart cut shots but the Brazilians shot clear and Duda’s smash sealed victory.
So it’s Larissa/Talita versus Agatha/Duda in the final – which guarantees, for the 58th time in World Tour history, a clean sweep of gold medals for Brazil. In women’s World Tour history it’s the 222nd time Brazil have been represented in the final in 314 tournaments. An incredible record.
