Women’s elimination round dominated by US and Brazil
Can Europe wrestle back control at the Fort Lauderdale Major?
It was a bad start for some of the top European women’s teams on a gloriously sunny Friday morning at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park.
None more so than the defeat of Olympic champ Kira Walkenhorst and Julia Groβner who were beaten by Dutch stars Meppelink/Van Gestel in straight sets on side court 4.
Meanwhile, highly-rated new teams from Germany and Switzerland – Borger/Kozuch and Vergé-Dépré/Heidrich – also fell by the wayside as the Americans and Brazilians gained the upper hand on day four of the tournament.
The last 16 of women’s elimination, which gets under way at 2.30pm, is dominated by the North and South Americans. Nine of the remaining 16 teams hail from either the US or Brazil.
Last night’s American heroes April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings get the action under way on Center Court – a game which is being streamed live on Facebook by the SportsBible – with a very special commentator – former heavyweight boxing champion of the world, David Haye.
