American girls progress doing the business on the beach
The American teams are giving their fans every reason to celebrate at the Fort Lauderdale Major this week.
Hot on the heels of the boys’ success so far the tournament, the US girls were in great shape as five out of the six pairs in the pool play made it through to Friday’s elimination phase.
Top seeds April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings lead the way following their qualification from Pool A and they were joined by new partnership Fendrick/Hughes, after they beat Dutch duo Stubbe/Sinnema on Center Court.
Another new team – and Sara Hughes’ former teammate – Kelly Claes also progressed to Friday’s elimination. With Kelly Reeves, the Americans went through in third place in Pool C.
But if there’s one team having fun in the sun then it’s local heroes Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross. The pair recorded a superb straight sets victory over Olympic champ Kira Walkenhorst and Julia Groβner to make it three wins from three matches to soar through to the last 16.
And the American fans were celebrating once again – this time on side court 2 – when Brittany Hochevar and Emily Day sealed a place in the next phase after their win over Germans Bieneck/Schneider.
