End of the #FTLMajor road for Olympians
Did somebody just say ‘upset’?! The men’s first round of elimination saw some incredible results as teams who starred at the Olympics bit the dust at the Fort Lauderdale Major.
The story of the day belonged to Swiss qualifiers Nico Beeler and Marco Krattiger who dumped out Canadians Saxton/Schalk in straight sets on side court 3. At least we’ll have an updated blog entry from Ben quicker than we thought…
However, Canada still ended the day smiling as two of their teams swept themselves through to the second elimination round. Brazilians Pedro Solberg and Guto Carvalhaes were favorites to beat Plantinga/O’Gorman but the North Americans had the last laugh and triumphed in two sets.
And if that wasn’t enough, the two Sams – Pedlow and Schachter – booked a second Canadian team through to round two after they knocked out Russians Stoyanovskiy/Yarzutkin.
Latvian Olympians and last year’s A1 Major Klagenfurt champs Samoilovs/Smedins also said goodbye to Florida after losing in straight sets to Markus Böckermann and Lars Flüggen. The Germans were far too good and stormed through to the next round with a straight sets win.
Austrian heroes Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst also suffered the agony of a three-set defeat as they went down to Brazil’s big serving giant Evandro and Andre Loyola.
Reigning Swatch World Tour Finals champs Alison/Bruno had a scare in their game out on court four. The Chilean Grimalt cousins took the first set only for the Brazilians to level the set score. In a thrilling third set, the cousins had one shot at victory but missed their match point – and that enabled Alison/Bruno to compose themselves and claim a much-needed win.
All of these games are available to watch back exclusively on our BeachStream and remember to check out every math live throughout the rest of the tournament.
