We highlight the go-to games on the first day of pool play at the Fort Lauderdale Major
The wait is finally over and the first Swatch Major Series stop of the season gets fully under way on Wednesday with the pool play.
With so many matches to take in, including the first ever games to take place under floodlights in Swatch Major Series history, it might be difficult to know where to head. So here’s our guide to five must-watch matches on day two of the Fort Lauderdale Major.
See you at the beach!
Who? Pedlow/Schachter v Platinga/O’Gorman
Where? Side Court 5
When? 10.30am
Why? Head over to Side Court 5 early in the morning and catch an all-Canadian clash, which is sure to pack a punch. Following Josh Binstock’s retirement, Sam Pedlow joined forces with Sam Schachter, leaving Grant O’Gorman to search for a new partner. And guess what the main draw threw up…yep you guessed it, the two new teams meet for the first time, so go and take look!
Who? Alison/Bruno v Brunner/Patterson
Where? Center Court
When? 11.30am
Why? It’s the first match on Center Court of the Fort Lauderdale Major. Surely that’s a good enough reason, right? But regardless of that, this is a mouthwatering match-up between the Olympic and Swatch World Tour Finals champions and the wildcards from America, Theo Brunner and Casey Patterson.
Who? Heidrich/Vergé-Dépré v Carico/Pollock
Where? Side Court 2
When? 12.30pm
Why? New partnerships are going to be the talk of the town over the next few days. So why don’t you check out young Swiss stars Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré in their first game on the sand together as the take on Americans Lane Carico and Irene Pollock.
Who? Walsh Jennings/Ross v Van Iersel/Flier
Where? Center Court - Floodlit
When? 6.30pm
Why? The undoubted stars of the home nation in the women’s bracket, Kerri and April face a potentially tricky match against a team making their beach debut in Florida. Can Holland’s Marleen van Iersel and Manon Nummerdor-Flier spring a surprise on Center Court?
Who? Lucena/Dalhausser v Doppler/Horst
Where? Center Court - Floodlit
When? 7.30pm
Why? Local heroes Lucena/Dalhausser will be the overwhelming crowd favorites under the lights on Center Court but don’t write off Doppler/Horst. After all the Austrians were the only team to inflict a defeat on Olympic champs Alison/Bruno on the Copacabana in Rio.
